But with both the casual and hardcore fighting game fan now already catered for, SoulCalibur needed to offer something truly unique to make it stand out. Boasting suspiciously smooth-looking visuals, eye-brow raising (but highly memorable) characters and a deep yet intuitive combat system, this historical beat ‘em up instantly left its mark on the genre.Īfter Street Fighter’s 2D combat demanded players master complex combos, Tekken’s pitch of a fully 3D and newbie-friendly brawler was a bit of a no-brainer. While Tekken may be the PlayStation fighter that most 90s kids remember, SoulCalibur was always its cooler and better-looking cousin. A Higher Calibur of Fighting Game The 90's PlayStation classic Soul Blade kickstarted the franchise. Yet, where SoulCalibur VI‘s mechanics and presentation feel thoroughly modern and fresh, its representation of women is still disappointingly stuck in the past. Yet, with last year’s Tekken 7raising the bar pretty spectacularly for 3D fighters, we were surprised to find that SoulCalibur’s combat still feels just as sharp as it did two decades ago. Given its sword-slinging combat, there’s no small trace of irony in that fact. A full assortment of single-player modes! Story Taking place in the 16th century, revisit the events of the very first SOULCALIBUR in Soul Chronicle mode.For gamers of a certain age, the SoulCalibur series holds an almost weaponised degree of reverence. ![]() Wield Lethal Hits to deal huge combo damage and take down fearsome opponents! Soul Chronicle is a new Story Mode, recounting the events of the first Soulcalibur through a main storyline and a storyline for each character, including Geralt of Rivia. It can cause certain characters to transform into different versions of themselves, granting special abilities. Soul Charge returns since Soulcalibur III, completely overhauled. DiRT 4Īn advanced system where landing certain moves in the right condition will send the opponent flying, and score an Armor Break after enough hits have landed.Guard Impacts make their return into the game, and is free of any gauge cost.Critical Edge returns from Soulcalibur V, largely unchanged. It appears to break different sections of armor, as it did in Soulcalibur IV, and it also seems to affect hairstyles.Another new game mechanic is called the Lethal Hit. Armor Break makes a return from Soulcalibur IV and Soulcalibur V. The background music also gets louder drums while this happens. This triggers a slow-motion exchange with a single button input from each player, with the outcome decided by a much more complicated version of rock, paper, scissors. ![]() Soulcalibur VI introduces a brand new feature called Reversal Edge, which can be performed using a single button. The game kept many of the familiar gameplay elements including 8-Way Run, Guard Impact, and character creation, but adds to the traditional formula by introducing new mechanics such as Reversal Edge and the newly revamped Soul Charge. Following the tradition of prior installments of the Soulcalibur series, Soulcalibur VI’s gameplay involves two weapons-wielding combatants battling against one another using a 3D system. ![]()
